Most visitors to Italy head south in summer. The ones who've discovered Tarvisio come back every year. Nestled at the junction of Italy, Austria and Slovenia in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Alps, Tarvisio offers everything a summer mountain holiday should be — without the queues, the heat, or the inflated prices of more famous destinations.

Our apartment is your base for all of it. Sleeps up to six, has a private garden for lazy afternoons, and comes with e-bikes so you can cover more ground without breaking a sweat.

The Fusine Lakes — Tarvisio's most breathtaking secret

Just 15 minutes from the apartment, the Fusine Lakes are two glacial mountain lakes of almost unreal colour — deep turquoise ringed by ancient forest and jagged peaks. The Lago Superiore and Lago Inferiore sit inside a protected nature reserve, which keeps the area wild and unspoiled even at the height of summer.

You can swim in the lakes during summer — the water is cold and crystal clear. There's a small beach area at Lago Inferiore that's perfect for families and groups. A circular trail connects both lakes through the forest in about 90 minutes.

Arrive early in the morning for the best light and the calmest water — the lakes mirror the surrounding peaks perfectly on still days. Pack a picnic and make a half-day of it.

Hiking the Via Alpina

Tarvisio sits on the Via Alpina, one of Europe's great long-distance hiking routes, which crosses the Alps from Monaco to Trieste. You don't need to walk the whole thing — the sections around Tarvisio offer some of the most accessible and rewarding day hikes in the region, with well-marked trails through beech forest, open alpine meadows, and ridge paths with views across three countries.

Whether you're an experienced hiker looking for a proper challenge or a family after a gentle forest walk, the trail network around Tarvisio has something for every level. The local tourist office has detailed maps, and we're happy to recommend specific routes based on your group.

E-bike the Val Canale valley

Our apartment comes with e-bikes included — and Tarvisio is one of the best places in the Alps to use them. The Val Canale valley has a long, flat, paved cycling trail that follows the old railway line through the valley, connecting a string of small alpine villages with almost no car traffic. It's scenic, easy, and genuinely fun for all ages.

The e-bikes mean even non-cyclists in your group can cover 20–30km comfortably, stopping for coffee in Malborghetto or Pontebba along the way. It's one of those days that everyone remembers.

When to visit

Summer in Tarvisio runs from June through September. July and August are warmest and busiest, with long days, reliable sunshine, and temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s — cool enough to hike comfortably, warm enough to swim. June and September are quieter and often cheaper, with the same scenery and far fewer visitors. Early September is a favourite for hikers — the light turns golden, the forest starts to change colour, and the trails are almost empty.
